Two parents in Michigan are now in jail after a shocking case involving the death of their young son. Authorities say the situation shows serious neglect.

Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, have been charged with second-degree murder. Their 7-year-old son, Casper Jacob Shane O’Brien, died on Nov. 4, 2025, after being taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The case was reported by regional ABC affiliate WJRT and confirmed by Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. Both parents are being held at the Genesee County Jail without bond.

Police in Flint Township responded to a call about a child in distress that day. Casper was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive. His death left investigators asking serious questions about his care at home.

The cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy. The Mayo Clinic describes this as “a type of heart muscle disease that causes the heart chambers (ventricles) to thin and stretch, growing larger.” Officials said obesity can lead to this condition.

At the time of his death, Casper was just over 4 feet tall and weighed 255 pounds. According to the CDC, a healthy weight for a child his age and size is between 50 and 73 pounds. The difference was extreme and raised concerns right away.

Prosecutor Leyton said, “On the face of it, this is cruel and extreme suffering from this child caused by the neglect of the parents.” He also noted that Casper did not have a pediatrician and was only taken to a doctor once.

What stood out even more was what happened that same morning. Authorities said the parents called their veterinarian to treat their dog. Meanwhile, their child was in serious distress.

Leyton also revealed that the couple has a 5-year-old daughter. He said, “None of these kids even existed in the eyes of the government,” adding that child protective services had never visited the home.

The parents are expected to appear in court on July 2.

Casper’s obituary remembered him as “a bright, loving young boy whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him.”
