The world of superheroes is about to meet a brand-new Superman. Director James Gunn, who now leads DC Studios, has chosen actor David Corenswet to wear the iconic red cape in the upcoming Superman film. With great care and a long search behind the decision, Gunn believes Corenswet is more than just a good pick — he’s possibly Hollywood’s next big star.

A Careful Search for the Man of Steel

Finding the right Superman wasn’t simple. According to James Gunn, this casting was the foundation for the whole movie. “I said from the beginning, if I don’t find Superman I’m not going to do this movie,” he explained. For him, the character needed more than just good looks or muscles — the actor had to show real talent, emotional depth and strength.

Gunn looked at about 30 self-taped auditions, carefully going through each one. But Corenswet stood out early. Gunn had first seen him in the horror film Pearl, and the performance left a strong impression. That’s when Gunn wrote down his name as a potential Superman. Once auditions began, Corenswet was one of the first to read for the part. His screen test with Rachel Brosnahan who plays Lois Lane, sealed the deal. Their chemistry felt natural and strong.

Gunn made his expectations clear; he didn’t want someone who “had the look, but didn’t have the chops.” The person cast as Superman had to be able to carry the heart of the film — to make audiences believe in the hero’s strength but also in his kindness and doubts.

David Corenswet’s Rise to the Role

David Corenswet may not have been a household name before this, but he’s no newcomer to acting. Born in Philadelphia, and trained at Juilliard — one of the top performing arts schools in the country — he had been slowly building a solid career.

He appeared in Netflix shows like The Politician and Hollywood, both of which showed off his emotional range. On HBO’s We Own This City, he played a more serious role in a police drama. His appearance in Pearl — though brief — caught Gunn’s attention, and turned out to be the stepping stone to his biggest role yet.

Becoming Superman: The Physical Challenge

Playing Superman isn’t just about acting. The look matters too and Corenswet took the challenge seriously. He began a strict workout routine and gained nearly 40 pounds for the role. “I wanted to get as big as I could within reason and healthfully,” he shared in interviews. His training involved lifting heavy weights five to six days a week, with each gym session lasting over two hours.

He also changed his diet, drinking lots of high-calorie shakes to gain mass. Importantly, he made it clear that his transformation was done naturally — no performance-enhancing drugs were used. His goal was to become a Superman that looked strong but also real.

A New Superman for a New Generation

James Gunn’s Superman isn’t just another retelling. It’s a new beginning for the DC Universe. In this version, Superman is already an established hero but still young — about 25 years old — and learning how to balance his two identities. He’s powerful, yes, but also deeply human.

“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way,” said producer Peter Safran, “and he is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.” Gunn’s vision focuses on Clark Kent trying to understand how his Kryptonian side fits with his human upbringing in Smallville.

The story also explores his early relationship with Lois Lane and how their bond shapes his life. The film aims to capture a tone of hope and honesty — something many superhero stories have moved away from in recent years.

Early Buzz and Big Expectations

Even before its official release, the movie is getting strong reactions. Some early viewers praised Corenswet for switching smoothly between the shy, soft-spoken Clark Kent and the bold, confident Superman. His performance is already being called “believable” and “charming.”

The chemistry between him and Rachel Brosnahan has also been mentioned as a major highlight. Their connection is said to bring warmth and depth to the story making the characters feel more real. Reviewers have noticed that the film leans more into classic comic book feelings — wonder, imagination, and heart — rather than focusing only on action or darkness.

David Corenswet knows the pressure that comes with playing one of the most famous superheroes in the world. But with his dedication, training and acting skills, many believe he’s ready. James Gunn’s faith in him, paired with early positive reviews, suggests this new Superman may leave a lasting mark.

And while Corenswet may not yet be a global star — that might change very soon. The film is set not just to introduce a new Superman, but perhaps to introduce the world to a new leading man.
